NHL Review Clears Mike Babcock for Return to Coaching
NHL concludes review of Babcock's brief Columbus tenure.
The National Hockey League (NHL) announced Thursday that it has completed its review of former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Mike Babcock. The review stemmed from Babcock’s resignation less than three months after being hired by the organization back in 2023.
Babcock requested to view personal photos from players in an effort to get to know them better. The practice drew criticism, as many felt it was an invasion of privacy, ultimately leading to his resignation.
Now, the Stanley Cup champion and Olympic gold medal-winning coach is rumored to be in contention for the vacant head coaching position with the Edmonton Oilers. The league completed its review at the request of the NHL Players’ Association and released a statement Thursday.
“The League has completed its review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, and of certain alleged conduct associated therewith. Our investigation has concluded that, even in a light least favorable to Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the League.”
It remains unclear if or when the Oilers will hire Babcock, but the league’s findings clear the way for Edmonton to make the hire should it choose to pursue the 63-year-old.
Edmonton will look to return to its recent success after falling in a first-round playoff matchup this season following back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances.
